Dasein - an interactive art installation

The techniques and standards used to build this website.

Volicol is committed to building websites of a high standard using the latest, most stable and proven internet technolgies.

In this way we endevour to deliver a broad and enjoyable experience to as many users as possible.

The following are techniques and standards employed to make this possible.

Markup / CSS

This website uses a combination of XHTML 1.0 Strict and the more experimental HTML5 draft specification.

To differentiate, any pages using video playback (homepage / film) use HTML5 due to utilising the new <video> and <audio> tags. All other pages use the more conventional XHTML 1.0.

All XHTML / HTML markup can be validated here: http://validator.w3.org/

All CSS is compliant CSS1 or CSS2 and can be validated here: http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/

Browser Type

The following browser agents have been tested to work with this website:

  • Mozilla Firefox 3*
  • Mozilla Firefox 2*
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 8
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 7
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6
  • Safari 4.0
  • Safari 3.2
  • Opera 9.6
  • Google Chrome

This is inline with yahoo graded browser support for it's services.

The majority of other browsers should still render the pages correctly, although some differences in experience may occur.

Video Playback

Video playback is presented initially using HTML5 <video> tags. This allows for better performance and experience by removing the need for third party scripts and players such as adobe flash or apple quicktime. This aims to ensure more people can watch and enjoy rich media content.

You can read more about the <video> tag here: http://dev.w3.org/html5/spec/Overview.html#video

Codec Technology

At the time of writing there is a disagrement amongst browser vendors as to whicb codec and container to support. This has led to the removal of a recommended codec from the HTML5 specification.

There are 2 main containers / codecs used for video presentation in this website: mpeg4 using h264 and ogg using theora.

Ogg using the experimental dirac codec is also supplied as a technical curiosity to those who are interested.
